SSE started to lay the replacement to the damaged subsea power cable to Jura today, with a target completion in a week’s time.
The island chain of Islay, Jura and Colonsay, as we reported recently, have been without a power supply for six months, with back-up generators doing what they could, costing a fortune and causing knock-on problems of their own.
Local MSP, Michael Russell who was told by SSE of the start of the works, says: ‘This is very good news for the communities of Islay and Jura. The failure of the cable six months ago has created real problems for the islands.
‘I am very pleased that concerns expressed by many people including myself have been heeded and I am relieved that the company has confirmed to me today that it will be starting cable laying immediately and hopes to have it completed early next week, weather permitting.’
